Handcrafted by Deeksha Rathore
Inspired by my love for irregularities and slowmade by hand in my garden studio
HELLO,
I'm Deeksha Rathore, my work draws inspiration from natural forms and the wabi-sabi aesthetic philosophy, embracing organic lines and muted tones with a strong focus on functionality. Simple, serene, and soulful, each of my creations is made with love and electric-fired in my garden studio in Noida. Every piece is handcrafted with care, either wheel-thrown or hand-built, I use high-quality, internationally recognized glazes, applied through pouring, dipping, or brushing techniques. I welcome the beauty of “happy” accidents—drips, finger marks, subtle variations in clay color, or glaze textures—celebrating them as an integral part of handmade work. Each piece is truly one of a kind. When created as part of a small batch or collection, slight differences between items are natural and, to me, enhance the charm of artisanal craftsmanship.
Conscious ceramics
Pottery is often criticized for its high energy consumption and significant CO2 emissions. While this is true, I believe it is the responsibility of potters to embrace “eco-herence”—a commitment to coherent sustainability through mindful practices and environmentally conscious habits. For instance, I use clay from The Earth Tatva, a brand that reduces natural resource mining by 45%.
In my practice, I adopt energy-efficient kiln firing techniques. I fire my kiln using electricity, which is the cleanest method in terms of CO2 and fine particle emissions compared to gas or wood firing. I also fire during off-peak hours, pack my kiln as efficiently as possible. To minimize waste, I reuse clay scraps and conserve water through a series of buckets for cleaning tools and hands.
Moreover, since I started selling my ceramics, I’ve embraced eco-friendly, recyclable packaging materials, avoiding plastic as a standard for wrapping. I often reuse a lot of packaging material, fillers and old boxes. I've consciously tried to reduce over-packing and the packaging size. I also try and choose a more neutral palate. These steps reflect my commitment to sustainable pottery.
I truly believe that there's beauty in being unique. I hope my pieces serve as vessels of kindness and connection, carrying the warmth of my hands to yours. Just as a chef transforms apples from the earth into a scrumptious apple pie, a potter shapes raw clay into objects of beauty and purpose, meant to be valued, used, or simply admired.
